about katrina

I’m Katrina. I began this blog in order to document the trials and tribulations of first time home ownership in order to share with my family who live an hour away. As my projects have gotten fewer and more far between, the blog has become a catch all for experiences in my life.

Why jelly jars?

Formerly at cupcakesupremacy.com I knew I wanted a fresh start when we bought the house. I wanted something a little more structured because I figured I could only keep up a blog with a purpose. One of my favorite Neutral Milk Hotel song’s has a line “sing a song of jelly jars and bird calls” and jelly jars just make me think of home. We had a set of Welch’s jelly jars that we used as juice glasses growing up and the memory of them is so vivid and sweet that it all just came together. Plus I could get jellyjars.net. All the cool kids use .net.

So who am I?

I’m Katrina, born and raised in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. I attended the University of Pittsburgh for a time, I had to withdraw about halfway through due to monetary issues but I started back in 2010 when I was eligible for better financial aid. I am on track to graduate in Spring of 2015. What I will do after that? Who knows, but it sure has been a journey.

I am a middle child, smack in the middle of two older sisters and two younger brothers. I also have a beautiful niece and adorable nephew who are helping to quell the baby fever for a time.

I am married to Keith (as of May 24, 2014), the wonderful man that doesn’t read my blog so I can pretty much write whatever I want about him. (I’d write it even if I knew he were reading. ;)) We began dating in April of 2009, moved in together in August of 2009 and got engaged in July of 2011. I honestly couldn’t be happier. I met him at a time when I wasn’t looking or expecting anything serious and now here we are.

I come from a very large Italian family, the type that have gotten together for Sunday dinner my entire life. I don’t get down there as much as I’d like to, but I know some of them read my blog and I appreciate it!

In 2010, we adopted Daisy and she is the love of my life. I often say that we are soulmates and I’m not even kidding. I grew up always having dogs but none have gotten into my heart quite like she has. She’s barely a dog! She hates all dog things! She’s my doghter! And I love her dearly.

I find writing therapeutic and though I’ve never been one to journal I’ve had livejournals and blogs-before-they-were-blogs since middle school. I try to keep things lighthearted so if you ever see a serious post, it must be weighing heavily on my heart.

I like to read, for the past few years I’ve averaged 100 books/year, which sounds impressive but for every book I read, I find 3 more I want to read, so it will never be enough. I read just about anything, and often forget it as quickly as I read it, but I enjoy the journey!

I enjoy photography. It will never be a career (I’m not that good) but I’ve shot two weddings and hundreds of thousands of pictures of Daisy. 🙂

I am a big fan of DIY. I enjoy getting my hands dirty but most of all love the sense of satisfaction once a project is complete. I’ve become a master painter and wallpaper remover, I can change faucets, doorkobs, toilet guts. I haven’t yet tempted the electrical gods but I’m sure that’s in the cards soon.

Thanks for reading!
